Sarah Harlan Administrative Associate News & Information Services 812/465-7005 Strickland is the president, CEO, and founder of Manchester Bidwell, a jobs training center and community arts program aimed at providing educational and cultural opportunities to disadvantaged students and adults. Manchester Bidwell has changed the lives of thousands of people since its creation in the 1960s. "The Manchester Craftsmen's Guild is a testament to the power of the arts to transform children's lives," said Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. "Its students learn much more than how to shape clay, take pictures, and appreciate jazz. They leave the Guild knowing that they have the potential and tools to become successful and productive citizens." Strickland's inspiration for the creation of Manchester Bidwell came in the form of a high school art teacher who took him under his wing and went on to transform his life. The organization began as an after school program in a donated house and has evolved to offer accredited associate degrees and diploma programs in fields such as culinary arts, chemical laboratory technologies, health careers, horticulture, and office technology. Manchester Bidwell has been so successful Strickland is replicating the program throughout the country. "If this country has a future, it's because of the ability to form visions and partnerships," Strickland said. "I believe that we can change the United States of America in my lifetime. We've got to the change the way this country sees itself." Strickland graduated cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh in 1969 with a bachelor's degree in American history and foreign relations. He's received 10 honorary degrees and has been honored with numerous awards, including the MacArthur "Genius" award. |
