20th annual Early Childhood Conference to be held at USI

Wendy Knipe Bredhold Media Relations Specialist, News & Information Services 812/461-5259 Just before the keynote address, Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel will be presented with the Indiana Association for the Education of Young Children's Legislative Award for his role in establishing the Evansville Education Roundtable and work with the Early Childhood Development Coalition. The conference also will include a variety of workshops covering diverse topics such as Best Books for Children, Relational Aggression, Yoga for Children and You, Autism 101, Songs Kids Love to Sing, Recognizing Signs of Drugs and Alcohol, and Kindergarten Readiness: What is it? Workshops will be held from 8 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. in the Education Center. Katz, professor emerita of early childhood education at the University of Illinois, is co-director of the Clearinghouse on Early Education and Parenting (CEEP) and served as editor of Early Childhood Research and Practice, the first online peer-reviewed bilingual early childhood journal. She has also served as president of the National Association for the Education of Young Children and the Illinois Association for the Education of Young Children. She is the author of more than 100 publications including articles, chapters, and books about early childhood education, teacher education, child development, and parenting of young children. For 13 years she wrote a monthly column for parents of three- and four-year-olds for Parents Magazine. She was founding editor of Early Childhood Research Quarterly and served as editor-in-chief during its first six years. Her most recent book, co-authored with J. H. Helm, is Young Investigators: The Project Approach in the Early Years. Katz has lectured in all 50 states and 54 countries, and has held visiting posts at universities in Australia, Canada, England, Germany, India, Israel, the West Indies, and many parts of the U.S. She is the recipient of many honors including two Fulbright Awards and several honorary degrees. Katz was born and raised in England and became a U.S. citizen in 1953. She holds a Ph.D. in psychological studies from Stanford University. She will be introduced by her son Dan Katz, co-anchor of the morning show on local television station 14 WFIE. The conference, of interest to early childhood educators, students, and parents, is sponsored by the USI Department of Teacher Education and the Evansville Area Early Childhood Association. On-site registration, $30, will be available from 7:15 to 8 a.m. in the Education Center.
