Peggy F. Hollis, a specialist in wound, ostomy, and continence care at St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville, is the 2010 recipient of the Distinguished Nursing Alumna Award presented by the USI Nursing Alumni Society.

She was honored October 19 at the organization's annual dinner.

"Peggy Hollis' commitment to nursing excellence is reflected in her care of patients and in her teaching," said Dr. Nadine Coudret, dean of the College of Nursing and Health Professions. "She demonstrates the knowledge and caring that we seek to inculcate in all our students. Peggy's contributions to the USI program include teaching the wound-care certificate program and her mentoring and teaching of USI students."

Hollis is board certified as a clinical nurse specialist in adult health. She also holds certification from the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing Certification Board. She joined St. Mary's in 1987 as a staff nurse in oncology and has held her present position since 2003.

The level of caring that ostomy patients require exemplifies the reason Hollis became a nurse. "The patients really need help," she said. "Patient education is central to everything I do. When I see them on their first day postoperatively, they usually are traumatized by the change in body image that accompanies ostomy surgery. They are filled with grief and doubt that they will return to a normal lifestyle. I work with them all week teaching them how to manage. By the end of the week they are smiling and saying 'I think I'll be OK.' It makes my job fulfilling."

Hollis' service to the College of Nursing and Health Professions includes assistance in developing a continuing education program in wound management that has been completed by nurses across the United States and from other countries. She also teaches USI nursing students in the clinical setting.

She is a member of the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses Society and the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists.

Hollis earned a bachelor's degree in 1999 and a master's degree in 2003 from the USI nursing program. She completed a diploma in nursing in 1984 at Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing. Hollis lives in Boonville, Indiana.
