Sarah Harlan Administrative Associate News & Information Services 812/465-7005 Colleges Against Cancer, the sponsor of the USI/UE Relay, is kick-starting the recruitment and fundraising process with an event at 5 p.m. Wednesday, November 10 in the Recreation Fitness and Wellness Center's Quiet Lounge. Staff, faculty, and students can learn about Relay for Life, get fundraising tips for their team, and get inspired to help Colleges Against Cancer reach their goal of raising $15,000 for cancer research. Additionally, while registration for Relay for Life is usually $10 a person, anyone who attends the Relay for Life Kickoff will be able to register for free. The Office of Student Development Programs and Colleges Against Cancer are challenging faculty and staff members to put together the first faculty/staff team that USI's Relay for Life has ever had. Also, anyone who has survived or is currently battling cancer is invited to join Relay and be celebrated for overcoming their struggles with the disease. Next year's Relay for Life will be held from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on March 26 in the Physical Activities Center. "The overnight relay demonstrates that cancer never sleeps," David Duvall, assistant director in the Office of Student Development said. Along with the walk, there will be other activities including tug of war, pie eating contests, and inflatable bounce houses. Relay for Life is the signature fundraising event of the American Cancer Society. The Relay gives communities the chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, team members take turns walking or running around a track or path, and each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the 12 hours.
