Wendy Knipe Bredhold Media Relations Specialist, News & Information Services 812/461-5259 Labyrinth enthusiasts and experts from around the world will gather to learn, share, and celebrate the use of labyrinths. The gathering includes featured speakers, workshops, sales of labyrinth-related products, a silent auction, and lots of labyrinths. The gathering also includes the annual business meeting of The Labyrinth Society, where members are elected to the Board of Directors and have input into the activities of the organization. The theme for this year's gathering, co-sponsored by the University of Southern Indiana and Historic New Harmony, a unified program of the University of Southern Indiana and the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites, is "New Harmonies in the Labyrinth." New Harmony is already home to the Harmonist labyrinth and the Cathedral Labyrinth, but many temporary labyrinths will be created throughout New Harmony during the gathering. Registered participants will hear from labyrinth experts from New Harmony and around the world, enjoy maypole dancing and live music, but several events are free and open to the public. Free, open to the public The Cathedral Labyrinth will be lit with luminaries from dusk to 10:30 p.m. Thursday, November 11. The Posey County Saddle Club will offer Equine Labyrinths demonstration from 8 a.m. to noon Friday, November 12, and 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, November 14, on the lawn to the west of the Atheneum/Visitors Center. Eight riders on horseback will show how labyrinths are used to train horses and riders. There will be a worship service in the Roofless Church from 8 to 9 a.m. Sunday, November 14. The worship service will be led by the Rev. Mark Milligan and will blend elements from many faith traditions. The New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art, 506 Main Street, is hosting Jim Buchanan as artist-in-residence. Buchanan is working on a labyrinth installation in one of the historic log cabins on West Street. The New Harmony Artists Guild Gallery, 421 North Street, is hosting an exhibition by Toby Evans: "Zuvuya: Paintings Inspired by the Labyrinth." Ben Nicholson will display his labyrinth drawings from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, November 14, in his studio on the third floor of 520 Main Street. Labyrinth Society members and others will be creating temporary labyrinths (made of leaves, apples, sand, CDs and DVDs, paper hand cut-outs, and other materials) throughout New Harmony during the gathering. These outside demonstrations are open to the public. For more information, go to labyrinthsociety.org/annual-gathering. |
