Ten holiday gift ideas from the University of Southern Indiana

It's that time of year again. It's time to sketch out your holiday shopping list and work your way through crowded stores and shopping malls in an attempt to find the perfect gifts for your family and friends.

Why not avoid all the hustle and bustle this holiday season and purchase your gifts from USI? With these ten gift ideas, you're bound to discover some new and exciting items to add to your gift-giving list.

1. USI memorabilia

From USI-branded apparel, mugs, ornaments, jewelry, cornhole sets, and more, the USI Bookstore has something for every USI fan. Gift certificates in increments of $10, $25, and $50 are also available.

The USI Bookstore is located on the first floor of the University Center and is open when classes are in session from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday. Call 812/464-1717 for more information.

2. Gift certificates for continuing education courses

Each fall, spring, and summer, the USI Department of Continuing Education offers a new series of noncredit continuing education classes for personal growth and development. Classes range from academic enrichment, art, fitness, family, leisure, languages, and personal development. Admission to the University is not required for course registration.

Gift certificates are available for specific courses or a particular dollar amount by calling USI's Division of Outreach and Engagement/Extended Services at 812/464-1989 or 800/467-8600.

3. Southern Indiana Review subscription

Published in October and May by USI, Southern Indiana Review is a national literary magazine that includes poetry, fiction, nonfiction, art, and photography by emerging and established writers and artists from the Midwest and across the country.

One-year subscriptions are available for $20, two years for $36, and three years for $48. Subscription orders can be completed online or by sending a check payable to Southern Indiana Review to: USI College of Liberal Arts, 8600 University Blvd., Evansville, IN 47712. 4. Gifts from the Historic New Harmony Museum Shop

The Historic New Harmony Museum Shop offers a wide assortment of gifts ranging from books, desktop labyrinths and jewelry, pottery designed in the Harmonist tradition, and much more. Gift certificates are available for purchase by calling 800/231-2168 and select items can be purchased online at www.usi.edu/hnh/giftshop. USI employees are eligible for a 10 percent merchandise discount.

The Museum Shop is located in the world-renowned Atheneum/Visitors Center at 401 N. Arthur Street in New Harmony. The hours of operation are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Historic New Harmony is a unified program of the University of Southern Indiana and the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites.

5. Basketball tickets

The USI Athletic Department is offering special holiday ticket prices for men's and women's home basketball games. Chair back seats, normally $50, are available for $25. Special rates include the men's games with Harris-Stowe State University, (December 29), Saint Catharine College, (December 30), Maryville University, (January 6), Missouri University of Science and Technology, (January 8), and Drury University, (January 13). Women's games include Michigan Technical University, (December 30), Maryville University, (January 6), Missouri University of Science and Technology, (January 8), and Drury University, (January 13).

6. Gifts to the USI Foundation

Have someone on your list that is hard to buy for? A gift to the USI Foundation could be the answer you're looking for. Gifts can be made in honor of a specific person, in any amount, and to a specific designation. Gifts to the USI Foundation are used to support and sustain the goals of the University.

7. New Harmony Theatre season tickets/gift certificates

USI's New Harmony Theatre is offering gift certificates in any denomination that can be used toward the purchase of tickets for the summer 2011 season, which includes: Lost in Yonkers (June 17-19 and 24-26), The 39 Steps (July 8-10 and 15-17), and Avenue X (July 22-24, 29-31, and August 5-7). Season tickets are $55 for adults, $50 for students and seniors (60 and over), and $46 for groups of 20 or more.

The New Harmony Theatre is a professional Equity theatre produced by USI and is the Tri-state's only professional Equity theatre. Plays are performed in the historic Murphy Auditorium located at 419 Tavern Street in New Harmony. For more information, or to make a purchase, call the box office at 812/465-1635 or 877/NHT-SHOW.

8. Handmade ceramics by Lenny Dowhie and USI art students

USI art students will sell their wares during an annual holiday ceramics sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, December 6-7, and Thursday and Friday, December 9-10 in the University Center, near the USI Bookstore. Colorful one-of-a-kind mugs, bowls, vases, sculptures, and more will be available for purchase. Pieces by Lenny Dowhie, ceramicist and USI professor of art, will also be available. Dowhie will retire from the University in December, making this the last opportunity to purchase his work at the sale.

9. Starbucks coffee, merchandise, and gift cards

Visit the first floor of the USI David L. Rice Library and stop into the Starbucks coffee shop for some great gift ideas. In addition to coffee, Starbucks offers a variety of coffee-related goods such as mugs, stuffed animals, and special holiday merchandise. Gift certificates in any amount are also available.

Starbucks is open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, and 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

10. Jewelry, pottery, ornaments, and more from the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art

The New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art offers an assortment of handmade jewelry in sterling silver, flame-worked glass beads, and butterfly wings, a selection of pottery including mugs, vases, bowls, platters, pie plates, and casseroles, handmade ornaments and more. Gift certificates are available in any increment and a selection of items can be purchased online at www.usi.edu/nhgallery/giftshop. A 10 percent merchandise discount is available for USI employees.

Located at 506 Main Street, the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art is open year round from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays April-December. For more information, call 812/682-3156.
