CRLA presents the award to honor achievement, provide models of exemplary teaching for those new to the profession, and encourage all CRLA members to continue their professional development. Saxby was nominated for the award by her colleague Cyd Fithian, assistant math specialist in Academic Skills. "Lori is energetic and passionate about our University, our department, and the reading program. But most of all, she strives to be the best educator for all of her students whatever their level may be. Lori's tireless energy, strong academic focus on improving educational effectiveness, and exemplary work with CRLA made her an ideal candidate for this award." Saxby holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from the University of Kentucky and a Master of Education degree as a reading specialist from the University of Louisville. She joined USI in 1999 and has taught and supervised classes in reading, study strategies, vocabulary, and career planning. She serves as co-director for the Ohio River Valley region for CRLA and also is a member of the National Association of Developmental Education (NADE). She serves as a volunteer tutor trainer and board member for The Literacy Center, a non-profit agency committed to improving basic adult literacy in the community. |
