USI Hall of Fame class of 2011 announced

The University of Southern Indiana Department of Athletics is pleased to announce the selection of the 2011 USI Athletic Hall of Fame class that will be inducted during homecoming week in January. The class of seven individuals was selected by a 10-member USI Athletic Hall of Fame Committee.

Any Screaming Eagles fan was eligible to nominate student athletes or teams on the 10th anniversary of their last season of competition, or a coach/administrator who has been separated from the Department of Athletics for two years. Special individuals (e.g., Varsity Club members) were eligible for nominations as well.

This year's class includes Chad Gilbert (Men's Basketball 1994-96), Karianne Osowski (Softball 1993-95), Keil Kaiser (Men's Cross Country & Track 1992-97), Jason Krack (Baseball 1992-95), Megan Russell (Women's Soccer 1996-99), Wayne Boultinghouse (Men's Basketball 1974-81), and Dr. Donald Bennett (USI Director of Athletics 1992-95 Vice President Student Affairs 1970-95)

"The class of 2011 continues to show the strong athletic history USI has established," said USI Director of Athletics Jon Mark Hall. "Each member of this class made significant impacts on his/her respective team and served as a distinguished student athlete, coach, or administrator."

Plans are underway for the induction ceremony on the evening of January 28.

2011 USI ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME CLASS

Chad Gilbert, Men's Basketball: Gilbert was the NCAA II Great Lakes Regional Most Outstanding Player the year USI won the 1995 NCAA II National Championship. He was named All-American in 1996 by three different organizations and was a two-time All-GLVC performer. Gilbert also was named the GLVC Player of the Year in 1996 in leading the Eagles to the NCAA II Great Lakes Regional Championship game. He remains ranked in the top 20 all-time in scoring and rebounding.

Keil Kaiser, Men's Cross Country/Track: One of the USI leaders in cross country and track between 1992 and 1997, Kaiser earned All-GLVC honors twice (1993, 1994), All-Region accolades twice (1994 and 1995), and an All-America award once (1995) in cross country. He also earned All-America honors in 1997 in track. Kaiser also is the first USI runner to win the 10,000m championship at the Drake Relays.

Jason Krack, Baseball: Krack was one of the best clutch hitters in the history of the USI baseball team. He started his career as a third baseman before becoming a record setting defensive first baseman. A 1994 preseason All-American, he earned All-Region honors in 1992, 1993, and 1994 and All-GLVC in 1993, 1994, and 1995. Krack was named Academic All-GLVC in 1993 and 1994. He still holds the USI records for total bases in a game, putouts in a game, and putouts in a season. Krack continues to rank in the top five all-time at USI in hits, doubles, home runs, RBIs, runs scored, and batting average.

Karianne Osowski, Softball: Osowski was first-team Academic All-American and GLVC Player of the Year in 1995. She also earned All-Region and Academic All-District honors in 1994 and 1995. Osowski still holds the USI single-season and single-game records for striketouts, while ranking fourth all-time in innings pitched, complete games, wins, and shutouts. She also is second all-time in ERA.

Megan Russell, Women's Soccer: Russell helped lead the Eagles to the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals and was All-American in 1998. She also was a two-time All-Region, three-time All-GLVC, and a four-time Academic All-GLVC performer. Russell still holds the match and season records for points is tied for the match and season records for goals scored and holds the single-season record for assists. The four-time USI team captain also was recognized for her art talents at the 2000 Olympics.

Wayne Boultinghouse, Athletic Director and Men's Basketball Coach: Boultinghouse was the director of athletics and men's basketball coach from 1974-1981. He accumulated a record of 111-79 (ranks third all-time) and helped lead USI to its first two GLVC crowns and to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time in 1978.

Dr. Donald Bennett, Director of Athletics: Dr. Bennett was only the second USI Director of Athletics who was not a coach at USI and was the Vice-President of Student Affairs from 1970 to 1995. He was responsible for the hiring of Chancellor Dugan and Bruce Pearl, who helped lead the department into the national spotlight. He also was instrumental in the creation of the modern-day Athletic Department and the Varsity Club. A Varsity Club scholarship is still issued in his name. Dr. Bennett passed away in July 2010.
