USI's Newhart nabs GLVC honor
Amie Newhart
In USI's 85-68 win over visiting Kentucky Wesleyan College last Monday, Newhart netted a game-high 27 points, including 19 points in the second half. She was 9-of-16 from the field, 5-of-8 from three-point range, and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Newhart also added five assists and two rebounds. In the Eagles' 101-100 triple-overtime loss to visiting University of Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon, Newhart scored a career-high 39 points on 14-of-27 shooting. She was 5-of-9 from the three-point line, 6-of-6 from the free throw line and added three steals, three rebounds and an assist. The 39 points was the most by a USI player since Indianapolis Head Coach LeAnn Freeland '97 tallied 39 against IPFW during the 1996-97 season. For the week, Newhart averaged 33.0 points, 3.0 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. She shot 53.5 percent from the field, 58.8 percent from the three-point line and was perfect at the free throw line (10-10). Newhart, who is averaging 13.6 points and a team-best 3.2 assists this season, is the first USI women's basketball player this season to earn the conference's weekly award. This marks the first time in her career that she has earned GLVC Player of the Week honors. The Eagles (10-8, 6-4 GLVC), who are in a three-way tie for first place in the GLVC East Division, return to action Thursday at 5:15 p.m. when they host Lewis University at the Physical Activities Center. They complete their four-game homestand Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host the University of Wisconsin-Parkside for Homecoming. Other top performers last week included the University of Illinois-Springfield's Alyssa Palmer, Indianapolis' Katie Lyons, Lewis' Jenny Turpel, Maryville University's Angela Pepowski, Quincy University's Ali Schwagmeyer, Rockhurst University's Chrissy Sarcone, and UW-Parkside's Amy Selk. |
