In coordination with its current exhibition, "Bling! Art Jewelry from the Collection of Doris Murdoch," the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art and the University of Southern Indiana′s Office of Outreach and Engagement will host jewelry-making workshops on three Saturdays in February. All workshops will be led by Evansville artist Sarah Rhoades and will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

"The Basics of Jewelry-Making" will be taught on February 5. Rhoades will show students how to use beads to create almost any design and talk about current trends using leather cording and chains. Students should bring sharp scissors, round nose pliers and wire cutters. The registration fee is $40 and includes materials.

"Bring in the Bling! Intermediate Jewelry Design" will be held on February 12. Rhodes will build on student′s existing jewelry-making skills by "upcycling" jewelry –“ reusing found objects and beads to make new designs. Students should bring jewelry from their personal collections, sharp scissors, round nose pliers, and wire cutters. The registration fee is $50.

"Fabulous Findings! Advanced Jewelry Design," the final workshop on February 19, will enhance the students′ beading techniques and help save money with basic silver-smithing skills. Students will learn how to make their own head pins, earring findings, and basic clasps. Students should bring sharp scissors, round nose pliers and wire cutters. The registration fee is $50 and includes materials.

Register for these workshops by calling 812/465-1989 or by visiting USI′s Outreach and Engagement website at www.usi.edu/extserv and clicking on Arts and Leisure.

The New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art is sponsored by the University of Southern Indiana.
