Wendy Knipe Bredhold Media Relations Specialist, News & Information Services 812/461-5259 Last fall's workshop resulted in 62 Safe Zone-trained USI students. The purpose of the training is to learn about LGBT topics and terminology, receive resources and referral information, and to learn the necessary skills needed to be an ally for the LGBT community. The March 5 workshop will also be tailored to the unique needs of faculty and staff - for example, creating all-inclusive curriculum and handling mental health referrals. Dr. Amie McKibban, assistant professor of psychology, and Dr. Stephanie L. Young, assistant professor of communication studies, have partnered the University with Tri-State Alliance and the University of Evansville to offer community Safe Zone Ally trainings. One was offered in November of last year and more will be offered. "Safe Zone and its symbol are a message of support to community members and colleagues who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT)," McKibban said. "A Safe Zone ally displaying the symbol is someone who will be understanding, supportive, and trustworthy. An ally won't tolerate homophobic and heterosexist comments and actions, and will be familiar with terminology and resources in the local area." Register for the Safe Zone Workshop at www.usi.edu/opra/Surveys/safetyzone.htm. Registration is limited to 75 people. For more information, contact McKibban at 812/465-1222 or Young at 812/464-1737. |
