Award winning actor, singer, and composer kicking off Poetic Rhythm Saturday
Daniel Beaty
Beaty is an award winning actor, singer, and composer. He has performed in large and small venues. His most noted performance is Emergency (Emergensee), a self-written, one-man play for which Beaty won the Obie Award for Excellence in Off-Broadway Theater for Writing and Performing and the 2007 AUDELCO Award for Solo Performance. New York Magazine awarded him a 2007 Culture Award for Best Actor in Theater. In 2009, Beaty won the NAACP award for best actor in this play. Beaty has shared the stage with Rueben Studdard, Phylicia Rashad, Jill Scott, Mos Def, Rosy Dee, Osie Davis, MC Lyte, Tracy Chapman, Bill Cosby and others. He has been featured on Showtime at the Apollo, 106 and park, and the fifth season of Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam. Beaty holds a bachelor's degree with honors in English and music from Yale University and a M.F.A. in Acting from the American Conservatory Theatre. He is a member of the New Dramatists, the country's premier center for the support and development of playwrights. He will perform his motivational poem "Knock Knock," a poem chronicling the life of a confused, young boy growing up without his father. USI students are invited to present poetic talents. Special presentations will be given by visiting organizations of the National Pan-Hellenic Council. These NPHC groups are recognized chapters from universities. Hosts are Ken 'Mississippi Phat' Vivians and Deana Sanders. Mr. Vivians is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. This event is free and open to the public. Event co-sponsors are the Activities Programming Board and Order of Omega (leadership honor society for fraternities and sororities). |
