Sarah Harlan Administrative Associate News & Information Services 812/465-7005 Tutoring Tuesdays is a new initiative between Academic Skills and Housing/Residence Life, and the departments hope the program can continue past this semester as needed by students. "Students who receive tutoring generally report feeling more prepared for class sessions and perform better on course assignments," said Darrin Sorrells, learning assistance specialist in Academic Skills. "Tutors assist students in becoming better independent learners themselves. Tutors explore possible study strategies with students to assist them in becoming independent, self-directed learners." Most of the tutors in the program are college students who have completed a tutor-training program, have done well academically, and were recommended by faculty members. If students are interested in attending a tutoring session, they should bring course information with them, including the book, course syllabus, and notes, to best assist the tutor in answering questions and helping students understand course material. Tutors are available to assist students with math courses up to the calculus 1-level. Science tutors are available to assist students with most 100-level and 200-level biology and chemistry courses and 100-level physics courses. Writing assistance is also available. For more information on Tutoring Tuesdays, contact Sorrells at 812/464-1743 or ddsorrells@usi.edu. |
