Sarah Harlan Administrative Associate News & Information Services 812/465-7005 Senior citizens can learn about fall prevention, safe lifting, joint protection, energy conservation, exercise, nutrition, and medication while getting free cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, BMI, and vision screenings. "There are no doctors in New Harmony," USI nursing student Ryan Butler said. "The area is rural with lots of farming, and there is a severe need for medical services." Butler, one of 10 nursing students who organized the fair, said USI was approached by the New Harmony Town Council to organize a health fair. "We're hoping this is a starting point for future collaboration between the USI nursing program and New Harmony," Butler said. Students will be surveying health fair participants to find out what steps need to be taken to ensure people living in the rural areas around New Harmony get regular check-ups and other health care. Students are expecting between 70 and 100 people from Posey County to attend the health fair. The health and wellness fair is sponsored by the USI College of Nursing and Health Professions, CAPE, and the New Harmony Town Council. USI occupational therapy and social work students also will participate. For more information, contact Renee Dugger at 812/461-5241 or rdugger@usi.edu. |
