Distinguished Scholar looks at emotions in writing

Author Barbara Rosenwein is this year's Liberal Arts Distinguished Scholar at the University of Southern Indiana. Rosenwein will present "How Did They Love Thee? Counting the Approaches to a Fifteenth-Century Text," from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 16 in Kleymeyer Hall in the Liberal Arts Center. Her focus will be on how to understand writing that involves emotions.

Rosenwein, professor of history at Loyola University in Chicago, is the author of To Be the Neighbor of Saint Peter: The Social Meaning of Cluny's Property (909-1049), A Short History of the Middle Ages, Emotional Communities in the Early Middle Ages, and one of the Journal Annales "Best Books of 1999" Negotiating Space: Power, Restraint, and Privileges of Immunity in Early Medieval Europe.

Rosenwein's research specialty is on the middle ages and her research interests include history of emotions, religious, social and intellectual history of the Middle Ages, and interactions between the West, the Islamic world, and Byzantium in the Middle Ages.

Internationally known for her work on the history of emotions, Rosenwein has presented lectures in France, The Netherlands, Great Britain, Germany, Israel, Taiwan, and Sweden.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
