USI-led spring recess trips near and far

Wendy Knipe Bredhold Media Relations Specialist, News & Information Services 812/461-5259 Global Social Work in Jamaica For many years, the Department of Social Work has partnered with International Orphanage Relief to offer service learning in Mandeville, Jamaica. Graduate and undergraduate students who seek to increase their global awareness by engaging in social service work outside of the United States participate in a variety of activities, including painting, building, socializing with children, and engaging in research. The trip serves as a class for which students may receive up to three hours of class credit. Travel Study in Guatemala Michael Aakhus, dean of the College of Liberal Arts, continues to offer a Maya Art and Culture tour during spring recess. The group will tour the baroque churches of Antigua, the shrine at Aguas Caliente, the volcanic crater at Lake Atitlan, the stelae at Copan, the market at Chichicastenango, the temples and pyramids at Tikal, and the museums of Guatemala City. Since the 1970s, Aakhus has traveled throughout Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Peru and is an incomparably knowledgeable tour guide. He has led the spring recess trip since 1996. Service Learning in Belize Staff from Recreation, Fitness, and Wellness and Housing and Residence Life will take USI students to San Ignacio, Belize, to work with local people to rebuild a school. Students from across the University will participate in the trip. Belize is known for ecotourism. Students will tour caves, Mayan ruins, and the Belize Zoo, a facility focused on rehabilitating indigenous species. Habitat Build in Florida The USI chapter of Habitat for Humanity will travel to Martin County, Florida, to work on Habitat build sites - installing roof shingles and hanging drywall - volunteer at the Habitat ReStore, and work with the Boys and Girls Club of Hobe Sound. Afternoons will be open for students to spend at the beach. OT in Honduras Dr. Barbara Williams, director of Occupational Therapy, took a group of students to Honduras on February 25. The students are working at an orphanage in Honduras, providing occupational therapy services for children age 5 to 18. The OT group returns March 4. |
