Dr. Anya King, assistant professor of history, will present "A Quest for Cathay" from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, March 31 in Rice Library at the University of Southern Indiana. As part of the Medieval Studies Forum, the presentation will focus on a chapter in Eurasian history when the nomadic Khitan people established an empire in northern China, which eventually became the Liao Dynasty.

Dr. King will look at the early history, 10th and 11th centuries CE, of Khitan Liao relations with the Islamic world. She will trace the history of the Khitans and their contacts with the Islamic world using newly identified sources on Khitan trade, which show that information reached the Islamic world soon after the formation of the Khitan state.

The presentation is free and open to the public.

The Medieval Studies Forum was created in 2006 for faculty, staff, students, and the community to gather to learn about a variety of medieval topics ranging across disciplines such as literature, art, history, gender studies, and material culture.

For more information, contact Dr. Elizabeth Passmore, assistant professor of English at epassmore@usi.edu, or 812/461-5433.
