Berry Plastics was nominated by several students, including Jon Eickhoff, a senior engineering major, who said, "My experience at Berry Plastics has been instrumental in my development as a young mechanical engineer. I am treated professionally and respectfully every minute that I am on the job. Berry understands how important a good intern program can be to the company." Berry Plastics is a leading manufacturer and marketer of plastic packaging products, including open top and closed top packaging, polyethylene-based plastic films, industrial tapes, medical specialties, packaging, heat-shrinkable coatings and specialty laminates. The company's 17,000 plus customers range from large multinational corporations to small local businesses. Based in Evansville, the company has 68 manufacturing facilities worldwide and nearly 14,000 employees. Leadership Evansville was nominated by Don Crankshaw, a graduate student in the Master of Public Administration program, who completed his required internship there. "I was treated as a part of the LE staff from the beginning," Crankshaw said. "I was included in planning and decision making processes, my input was valued, and my skills and talents appreciated. Just as Leadership Evansville teaches effective processes for collaboration, so was my internship a collaborative process." Leadership Evansville's mission is to develop effective leaders committed to utilizing diversity and creativity for the betterment of the community. Over the past decade alone, over 1,000 employers have provided internship opportunities to USI students - including businesses, non-profit organizations, and government agencies. "As we continually strive to make experiential education a part of the overall academic experience for all USI students, we in USI Career Services feel it is imperative to recognize those organizations that share this vision through offering internship and cooperative education opportunities to our students," said Philip Parker, director of Career Services and Placement. "The difficulty is in selecting from the numerous employers that are so deserving of this recognition." The 2009 recipients were Blue & Co., an Indianapolis-based accounting firm, and Wesselman Nature Society. |
