Erika Myers-Bromwell Director of New Harmony Gallery of Comtemporary Art 812/682-3156 The New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art is sponsored by the University of Southern Indiana. Agha will also offer a free public lecture at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, in Room 101 in the Liberal Arts Center on the USI campus. Agha creates her multilayered mixed media drawings by combining text and media images with traditional South Asian techniques of embroidery, dyeing, wax, and beading. To complete one of these pieces takes countless hours of painstaking needlework, a task which, in many cultures, is believed to be exclusively designated for women. It is this high level of craft which draws the viewers in to reflect on gender roles in our multicultural world. Agha was born in Lahore, Pakistan. She completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in textile arts at the National College of Arts in Lahore and her Master of Fine Arts degree in fiber arts at the University of North Texas. Her work has exhibited nationally and internationally in more than 10 solo shows and 40 group shows. In 2005-2006 she participated in two artist-in-residencies in Houston, Texas. For three years she taught at the college level in the Houston area. Since 2008 she has been assistant professor of drawing at Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis. The New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art is located at 506 Main Street in New Harmony, Indiana and is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
