The fourth annual USI Robotics Competition sponsored by the Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Student Chapter of the University of Southern Indiana will be held from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, April 15 in the Business and Engineering Center. Registration is due by 5 p.m. on April 1. Register for free at http://web.usi.edu/asme/register11.html.

Teams competing in this year's competition will develop a robot to assist in readying the base of a Martian mining site that's been damaged by a small meteor. The robot must navigate the road to the gate of the site, harvest ore and deposit it at a refinery, clear the debris in front of the communications building on the site, and deactivate the emergency beacon, signaling the "all clear" for the recovery team.

Any local middle school, high school, or college student may compete. Teams of up to four students are to work together to design, build, and program a LEGO Mindstorms robot to complete the mission. Both RCX and NXT kits are permitted. Teams will be placed in divisions based on their grade level. For more information on rules, robot specifications, programming, scoring, and course specifications, click here. With the USI Robotics Competition, students have the opportunity to learn about foundational elements of the robotic field by designing, testing, and implementing LEGO robotic systems.

The USI Robotics Competition is a collaborative event between USI's student chapters of the ASME and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The competition is organized and run by USI ASME with support from the USI Pott College of Science and Engineering, Southwestern Indiana STEM Resource Center, ASME Center for Leadership and Diversity, Indiana Space Grant Consortium, and the Student Government Association of USI. The ASME Student Chapter of USI is student-run and open to all engineering students at USI. The chapter's purpose is to explore the world of engineering through activities, speakers, and projects.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Dr. Natasha Smith, ASME USI Student Chapter faculty advisor, at 812/465-1087 or nlsmith@usi.edu.
