The reception and awards ceremony is free and open to the public. The exhibition includes 155 artworks by 88 students. The media represented are painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, woodworking, jewelry, ceramics, graphic design, interactive media, photography, and illustration. The juror for this year's Student Art Exhibition is Beckey Alley, exhibitions and programs director at the Lexington Art League in Lexington, Kentucky. Alley will present the Juror's Lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 24, in Kleymeyer Hall in the lower level of the Liberal Arts Center. Alley earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in studio art from Washington University and a Master of Fine Arts degree in studio art from the University of Kansas. Before joining the Lexington Art League staff, she was the director of University Galleries at Murray State University. She has organized over 100 shows and curated several major projects including "Think Tank," an international show of political art, and "Creatures Great and Small," a touring exhibition of contemporary art featuring animals. She also has exhibited her artwork in several galleries across the U.S. as well as in South Korea and China, and recently had a solo exhibition at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania. The independent juror is brought in to assure objective selection of art works and awards, and to provide an educational experience for students in preparation for professional careers in art. Juried exhibitions are standard procedure in group art shows at universities, museums, and art associations. Area companies and private individuals generously provide funds for awards. Awards are given in the form of merit awards, purchase awards, scholarships, and certificates for art supplies. Awards are given for the quality of student artwork, and are awarded at the discretion of the juror. Merit award recipients, scholarship recipients, and certificate winners retain possession of their work. Scholarships are based on the overall merit of the student's work and are applicable to USI only. Purchase awards become part of the USI Art collection. The USI Juried Student Art Exhibition is open to all students who are enrolled at USI for the current semester. The artwork entered must be the student's original artwork and must have been completed during the one-year period between the previous Student Art Exhibition and the current exhibition. The exhibition will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays through April 29. For more information, call the art center at 812/228-5006. |
