Diversity conference to host service learning expert
Dr. Dan Butin
The conference will investigate issues of social justice, equity in education, cultural critique and engagement, and civic and community development. Participants will be encouraged to consider how school and university curricula can empower educators in all disciplines to focus on impacting student achievement and community needs through service learning. Butin has a Ph.D. in social foundations of education from the University of Virginia and is the author and editor of more than fifty books, book chapters, and articles. His most recent books include Teaching Social Foundations (2005), Service-Learning and Social Justice Education (2009), The Education Dissertation (2010), and Service-Learning in Theory and Practice: The Future of Community Engagement in Higher Education (2010). He has been the assistant dean of the school of education at Cambridge College and a faculty member at Gettysburg College. Prior to working in higher education, Dr. Butin taught middle school, in an adult GED program, and was the chief financial officer of Teach For America. Other speakers at the conference will be Christin DePouw from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Dr. Isaura Pulido from Illinois State University.
