The University of Southern Indiana will hold its first annual Law Day on Monday, April 4, in conjunction with the Indiana Court of Appeals oral argument in Edward Godby v. State of Indiana to be held at the University that day.

Law Day, organized by Dr. Nicholas LaRowe, assistant professor of political science and coordinator of the Pre-Law Program, is a day full of activities centering on law and the judicial system. LaRowe will give a presentation on the Pre-Law Program from 9 to 9:45 a.m. in the auditorium in the lower level of Rice Library (Room 17). From 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the same room, a panel of local attorneys and judges, including Vanderburgh Superior Court County Judge Robert Pigman and attorney and USI adjunct faculty Mark Rietman will discuss careers in the legal field.

"This should be a fantastic opportunity for USI students, faculty, and members of the Evansville-area community to witness Indiana's judicial branch in action, meet members of the local legal community, and learn about what USI has to offer for those interested in law school or a legal career," LaRowe said. For more information about Law Day, contact LaRowe at 812/464-1727 or nllarowe@usi.edu.

All Law Day events and the Court of Appeals oral argument are free and open to the public.

The Court of Appeals will hear oral argument in Edward Godby v. State of Indiana at 1 p.m. in Carter Hall D in University Center West. A panel of judges consisting of Judge L. Mark Bailey, Judge Melissa S. May, and Judge Elaine B. Brown will hear the case on appeal from Ripley Superior Court.

In this appeal, Edward Godby, who was convicted of a number of methamphetamine-related offenses based in part on material found in a locked box in his garage, challenges whether his wife's consent to search the garage and locked box was valid and whether he was subjected to double jeopardy. Arguing for the Appellant (Godby) will be Leanna Weissmann, and arguing for the Appellee (State of Indiana) will be Brian Reitz.

In its "Appeals on Wheels" initiative, the Court of Appeals hears oral argument at venues across the state to enable Hoosiers to learn about the judicial branch. After the case has been argued, members of the audience may ask questions about the judicial process in Indiana. The Court has heard more than 275 oral arguments "on the road" at law schools, colleges, high schools, and county courthouses since its centennial in 2000-2001.

The Court of Appeals of Indiana is the state's second-highest court and reviews appeals from trial court decisions. A decision of the Court of Appeals of Indiana is final unless granted further review by the Indiana Supreme Court.

The 15 judges on the Court of Appeals issue more than 2,300 written opinions each year, sitting in three-judge panels.
