Volunteer USI celebrates milestone millionth service hour
|
President Linda L. M. Bennett will lead the volunteer teams and read a special proclamation from Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel proclaiming April 17 Volunteer USI Day. Alumni, students, faculty, administrators, staff, and interested persons from the community are asked to help with Spruce Up. During the event, Volunteer USI anticipates reaching one million hours of service. Volunteers will meet at Eicher Barn, near the USI baseball field, at 1 p.m. to register. The jobs list includes refurbishing Eicher Barn fire pit and setting up three benches, planting fruit trees alongside Bockelman #3 School, staining garden fence at Grimes Haus, cleaning up inside and outside Westwood Lodge, setting railroad ties along the trails, and cleaning trails behind Eicher Barn. Refreshments will be served and all equipment will be provided. Every volunteer will receive a t-shirt. Work will continue until 4 p.m. Volunteers are individuals who share their time and skills to benefit the needs of USI. Volunteer USI was created in 1996 and careful records have been kept of the service hours. Volunteer assignments have ranged from one-time, short-term, or ongoing, depending on the type of work to be accomplished and the volunteer's availability. Volunteer hours have been accumulated at athletic events, in academic departments, in clinical and field experiences, for tutoring, and for other tasks and events. Lloyd Jost of Evansville is chair of the 15-member advisory council for Volunteer USI. The program is administered in the Office of Alumni and Volunteer Services, directed by Nancy Johnson. Volunteers for Spruce Up or other volunteer tasks may register with the Volunteer USI office at volunteerusi@usi.edu or call 812/464-1924. |
