Men will (literally) Walk a Mile in Her Shoes April 12

Wendy Knipe Bredhold Media Relations Specialist, News & Information Services 812/461-5259 Among the men participating will be Barry Schonberger, USI dean of students, Eric Williams '89, Vanderburgh County sheriff, Nick Hermann, Vanderburgh County prosecutor, Terry Winkler, Boonville's assistant police chief, and Evansville Police Department sex crime detectives Jim Harpenau, Brian Turpin and Nathan Schroer. Registration for the Walk will begin at 5 p.m. in front of the Liberal Arts Center. Samantha Church, a sexual assault survivor, is the featured speaker. After the walk, Williams, Hermann, and Schonberger will pledge with students and community members to make a difference. Men, women, and children are invited to participate. The walk is supported by a number of USI campus organizations, including the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, Order of Omega, SGA SOS Grants, and the Wrestling Club. USI also has an active men's awareness group called Male Allies Against Rape & Violence (MAARV). Community sponsors include APA, Fraternal Order of Police #73, Fraternal Order of Police #148, Demolition City Roller Derby, Premiums Plus, and SouthWest Graphix, among others. Albion Fellows Bacon Center, a nonprofit agency serving victims of domestic and sexual violence, provided sexual assault services to 653 victims in 2010. Albion provides emergency shelter, a 24-hour crisis line, short-term individual crisis counseling, support groups, and legal and medical advocacy to victims and their friends and family.
