USI's Brendel garners GLVC honor
Amanda Brendel
Brendel hit .500 with a home run and three RBIs as the Screaming Eagles swept the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and Saint Joseph's College to finish the week with a 4-0 record. On Saturday, Brendel went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs, a triple, and an RBI in the Eagles' 8-0 win over UW-Parkside in game one. She was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base in USI's 4-3 win in the nightcap. In USI's 2-1 win in the first game against Saint Joseph's on Sunday, Brendel went 3-for-3, scored the game-tying run in the fourth inning, and hit the game-winning home run in the sixth inning. She belted a run-scoring double in the first inning of USI's 6-2 win in the second game that gave USI a 1-0 lead it would not relinquish. For the season, Brendel is hitting .378 with eight doubles, five home runs, and 16 RBIs. She has hit safely in 16 of her last 17 games and is hitting .462 with four home runs and 11 RBIs during that span. A physical education/teaching major and a graduate of Salem Community High School, Brendel earned second-team All-GLVC honors as a sophomore in 2009 and was a third-team Academic All-District V honoree a year ago. This marks the first time in Brendel's career that she has earned GLVC Player of the Week honors and the second time this season that a USI softball player has earned the award-sophomore designated player Stephanie Bittner (Evansville, Indiana) earned the honor earlier this season. USI (17-15), which improved its GLVC record to 8-8 on the season, hosts Oakland City University (15-12) Wednesday at 5 p.m. in a Midwest Region doubleheader at the USI Softball Field. The twinbill was originally scheduled to be in Oakland City, Indiana, but was moved due to field conditions. |
