National Day of Silence observations

Sarah Harlan Administrative Associate News & Information Services 812/465-7005 Breaking the Silence will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 14 in Mitchell Auditorium of the Health Professions Center. Crystal Steltenpohl, president of H.E.A.R., will discuss how discrimination and bullying follow youth into adulthood and the importance of being an ally to the LGBT community. Other participants are Jazmyn Gideon and Elliot Colin, a University of Evansville student. Dr. Amie McKibban, professor of psychology, will be sharing her personal journey to becoming an ally. The evening will culminate with McKibban shaving her head to make a statement against discrimination. "This is a highly personal statement with regard to my story about becoming an ally," McKibban said. "Much of my professional work surrounds cultural change with regard to LGBT issues and for this year′s Day of Silence, I have decided to mesh together my personal passion with my professional efforts." On Friday, April 15, there will be a 3 p.m. screening of the documentary Bullied in Forum 1 in the Wright Administration Building, followed by a panel discussion.
