The USI Counseling Center and the assistant provost for Undergraduate Studies are sponsoring two webinars on the LGBT community at USI.

The first webinar, "Other, Please Specify: The Lives of Transgender People on Campus," part of the Campus Pride Webinar Series, will be shown from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 18 in HP 1027. Attendees will be given an opportunity afterward to discuss the content and its application to the USI community.

The webinar is based on interviews with 400 self-identified transgender people from throughout the United States. It compares the experiences of individuals from different transgender groups and offers a series of "touchstones," or significant life moments, in the gender identity development processes of the participants who identify as MTFs, FTMs, female-presenting crossdressers, and genderqueer individuals. Participants will learn how the experiences of younger transgender people today differ from the experiences of previous transgender generations and how transgender youth are changing the definition of what it means to be transgender. This webinar will assist an individual in understanding and learning more about transgender students, faculty, and staff and how to create a safer, more welcoming campus for everyone.

The second webinar, "LIFEGUARD: LBGT Suicide Prevention on Campus," part of the Campus Pride Webinar Series, will take place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 25 in HP 1027. Attendees will be given an opportunity afterward to discuss the content and its application to the USI community.

The webinar will address how student leaders, faculty, and
staff can support LGBT youth and reduce their risk for suicide, specifically different environmental stressors that contribute to a heightened risk among LGBT and questioning youth. Based on the Trevor Project's LIFEGUARD program, this webinar will focus on college campus communities and the impact of language, actions, and bullying/harassment on LGBT young people. Participants will leave with specific actions on how to recognize the warning signs of suicide and how to best respond as lifeguards on campus. A particular emphasis will be placed on best practices and experience to better work with LGBT youth populations. Presenters will also share programs and resources to support suicide prevention work from both national organizations Campus Pride and The Trevor Project. This webinar is also sponsored by the USI chapter of To Write Love on Her Arms.

"Persons who identify as LGBT are part of the diversity of our campus community, and participating in these events is an excellent opportunity to learn more about what we all can do - no matter what our role at the university might be - to make USI a safe, supportive and welcoming place for our LGBT students and colleagues," Stephanie Cunningham, staff counselor in the Counseling Center, said.

If you are interested in participating, RSVP to Cunningham at scunningha@usi.edu.
