Student Affairs administrator named at USI
Dr. Marcia Kennard Kiessling
Dr. Marcia Kennard Kiessling is currently assistant vice chancellor for Student Activities, Diversity, and Special Projects at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Charlotte, an urban research university among the fastest growing universities in the UNC system. She also has responsibilities as director of the Office of Student Activities to lead a management team for the Center for Leadership Development, Multicultural Resource Center, student media, and student programs such as Campus Activities Board, Student Organizations, Niners on the Weekend, and special programming including spirit and tradition building. Kiessling will assist the provost in guiding USI's Student Affairs programs and engage students in programs and services to help develop responsible, contributing members of a global society. Rochon said, "We work as a community at USI to enrich the lives of the students who are enrolled here. Dr. Kiessling's leadership skills and experiences in Student Affairs will mesh with the University's plans for strengthening student engagement in University life and building important traditions for students to cherish." Kiessling completed her Doctor of Education degree from North Carolina State University. She holds the Master of Science degree from Western Illinois University and Bachelor of Arts degree in English and philosophy from the University of Evansville. The strong culture of collaboration at USI is important to Kiessling. She said, "Much of my work at UNC Charlotte has been accomplished through partnerships that are broader and have more impact than any one department or division can create. I view collaboration as a continuing pattern in my work as I transition to USI. The two institutions are similar in that both are relatively new and both were regional campuses that developed into universities." Kiessling serves on multiple UNC university committees and is an instructor in Ethics and Leadership for the Center for Leadership Development academic certificate program. Active in her profession, she is a member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), the National Association of Campus Activities (NACA), Southern Association for College Student Affairs (SACSA), and Association of College Student Unions International (ACUI). She serves as public policy coordinator, representative and member of the National Public Policy Division, and member of the Spirituality and Religion in Higher Education Knowledge Community for NASPA Region III. She has been a presenter at NASPA national conferences and was the opening speaker at the 9th annual Multicultural Leadership Conference at UNC Charlotte. Her research has been published in the NASPA Leadership Exchange and is awaiting publication in NACA Programming Magazine and in Education Review. In recent years she received the Certificate of Recognition at the International Women's Day Celebration and an award from the National Association for Campus Activities Research in Campus Activities Program. Early in her Student Affairs career she worked at Clemson University in South Carolina and at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania. She was Student Activities specialist at Ventura College in California and since 1995 has worked at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. |
