Pell Grant funds impact summer financial aid

The Department of Education released guidance on April 27 on how universities should proceed with regards to awarding the Federal Pell Grant for summer 2011. Students should check with the Office of Student Financial Assistance at USI for eligibility. The Financial Assistance Office has been informed that summer 2011 will be the last summer for the year-round Pell Grant, the Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) and the National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART). Students who are eligible for the Federal Pell Grant as indicated on the 10/11 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) may be eligible to receive additional Pell Grant for this summer if they meet the criteria outlined below. - Must have a 2010-2011 FAFSA on file with USI. AND - Must be degree-seeking. This award is not available to students who are simply taking summer courses as a visiting student. AND - Must be seeking FIRST undergraduate degree students who have completed the requirements for their first bachelor's degree are not eligible. AND - Must be meeting the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy requirements. AND EITHER a. Must have remaining Pell Grant funds in the 10/11 school year. Students who attended less than full-time during part of the academic year may have Pell Grant funds remaining for summer. OR b. If they received 100 percent of the First Scheduled Pell Grant Award by officially attending full-time for both fall 2010 and spring 2011 semesters. AND c. Be enrolled at least half-time (six credit hours) towards your degree for summer 2011. AND d. Must have successfully completed or be enrolled in at least a 25th credit hour during the academic year (Fall 2010, Spring 2011, and Summer 2011). The Federal Pell Grant is subject to adjustment or cancellation due to changes in a student's FAFSA, enrollment status, satisfactory academic progress, or other factors. The summer 2011 Pell Grant will appear on eligible students' MyUSI within the next week. No additional application is necessary. |
