New Harmony exhibition explores manifestation of capitalism

Alison Erazmus Assistant Director New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art 812/682-3156 In "Ea$t/ We$t: a Global Look at Capitalism," the artists work in multiple disciplines and explore how capitalism manifests around the world. The work critiques, satirizes, and even slightly celebrates consumer goods and a capitalist system of production that has created a global market. Overall, the exhibition describes the uncanny nuances of Midwestern decor in conjunction with the society of communist China - the origin of many products westerners consume. Miner received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Michigan University and a master's degree and doctorate from the University of New Mexico. He is assistant professor of Transcultural Studies at Michigan State University. Briggs obtained her bachelor's degree at Carnegie Mellon University and her Master of Fine Arts degree at Maryland Institute College of Art. She currently resides in Minnesota where she teaches at Gustavus Adolphus College. Locke acquired her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the Kansas City Art Institute and her Master of Fine Arts degree at Wichita State University. She is assistant professor of Drawing at Eastern Michigan University. Michna received her Master of Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute in 1978. She currently lives in New Harmony, where she works out of her own studio. A reception for the artists will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 14, and is free and open to the public. During the reception, the artists will be available to answer questions. New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art is located at 506 Main Street in New Harmony, Indiana, and is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays.
