Tuition increases explained at public hearing
|
"The USI Board of Trustees is committed to providing affordable, quality higher education and has a history of maintaining an affordable fee structure," President Linda L. M. Bennett said at the hearing. "USI is the most affordable baccalaureate-degree granting institution in Indiana." She explained because the state of Indiana provides funding on a formula basis, the difference in appropriations per full-time Hoosier student is significant. "To put this in perspective, the USI 2010-2011 tuition and fees were 26 percent or $1,974 less than the average of the other four-year public universities in Indiana. And compared to other four-year residential campuses, the USI tuition and fees were 34 percent or $2,919 less." With increases continuing in number of enrolled students and in operational expenses, the University proposes tuition for a full-time, in-state, undergraduate student be set at $5,852 in 2011-2012, an increase of approximately $252. In 2012-2013, tuition would be set at $6,145, an increase of $293. The increases will help fund more full-time faculty positions and strengthen programs leading to student achievement. USI plans to strengthen the advising system for students to mentor and guide them toward success. Three USI trustees were in attendance. There were no comments from persons attending the hearing. At the July 14, 2011 meeting, the USI Board of Trustees will establish the tuition and fee structure for the next two academic years. |
