Chris Baumgart Student Worker News & Information Services 812/465-1192 The AMIGOs actively participate in new student orientations and Welcome Week activities. Sophomore AMIGO Zack Mathis describes his jobs during a typical introductory session. "During Orientation, duties range from giving presentations to small groups in your college about things such as the course bulletin, meeting with an advisor to plan a class schedule, and ways to get involved, to providing a student's perspective to questions that parents may have, or just helping with directions so everyone gets where they need to be." Essentially, AMIGOs offer peer leadership and support. They are indispensable to the academic advising process, as they help students enroll in classes and offer invaluable advice about which courses are key elements to academic success. Not only are AMIGOs the face of academics, they are the door to the USI and Evansville communities. AMIGOs provide new students with the information they need to become acquainted with their new "home away from home." For many students from outside the Evansville area, AMIGOs provide the link to community activities, restaurants, entertainment, and general recreation. They have the know-how to help students settle into college life. AMIGOs help new students get to know each other, as well as make new friends themselves. Senior AMIGO Megan Criss said, "I am looking forward to meeting all the new students." New AMIGOs are able to learn the ropes under the guidance of returning AMIGOs. Amber Key, the student assistant for Orientation, plays an essential role in the organization. To her, being an AMIGO has been a life-changing experience. "I met some of my closest friends through my time as an AMIGO. I met my mentor and the person I respect most in this world. This kind of opportunity to meet people and develop relationships with them while serving as their campus resource makes being an AMIGO the best job on campus." To become an AMIGO, a student must be enrolled full time (at least 12 credit hours), carry a 2.5 cumulative GPA, have completed 12 credit hours before the start of the spring semester, and be friendly, fun, and helpful in communicating the practices, policies, and culture of USI. The AMIGOs share the goal of giving students the best possible college experience. Junior Kaitie Webster sums it up best. "One of the most important aspects of Orientation is making sure that our new students and their families feel comfortable at USI. We want our students to feel safe, have fun, learn a lot, and know that they have the support of the entire campus behind them every step of the way." Current AMIGOs: Ellen Allen- F.J.
