New Harmony Theatre ends the 2011 summer season with the a capella musical, Avenue X, concept, book, and lyrics by John Jiler, and music and lyrics by Ray Leslee. Directed by Elliot Wasserman, professor of theatre and department chair at the University of Southern Indiana Department of Performing Arts, the musical recalls the early days of doo-wop music. In this powerful story of Italian and African-American youth in 1960s Brooklyn, New Harmony audiences born on both sides of 1960 will find their meeting point in these dazzling a capella tunes. For Wasserman, "this is one of the most musically gifted casts New Harmony Theatre has ever fielded. Actors include singing veterans of the musicals Jelly's Last Jam and West Side Story."

New Harmony Theatre's cast includes Actors' Equity Association members Nora Cole as Julia, Christopher J. Deaton as Chuck, Marley DelDuchetto as Barbara, Sean Ewing as Pasquale, Azudi Onyejekwe as Winston, Curtis Wiley as Milton, and DaRon Lamar Williams as Roscoe. The cast is rounded out with Equity member candidate Jason Pintar as Ubazz.

The production features scenic design by Robert Broadfoot, lighting design by Sean Nicholl, costume design by Shan Jensen, musical direction and choreography by Kenney Green, and stage management by Actors' Equity Association production stage manager, Liz Reddick. Fight choreographer Eric Altheide, assistant professor of theatre at USI, and USI Theatre student Daniel Kopp, sound designer, round out the artistic team.

Avenue X runs July 22-24, July 29-31, and August 5-7.

Evening performances start at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and matinees begin at 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets are $29 for adults, $27 for seniors (60+), and $12 for those 25 and younger. Strong adult language is used throughout this musical.

New Harmony Theatre is a professional Equity theatre produced by University of Southern Indiana. Plays are performed in the historic Murphy Auditorium located at 419 Tavern Street in New Harmony, Indiana.
