USI brings NASA workshop (and more) to area teachers

Photo Credit: HI-RES | WEB RELATED VIDEO:  RELATED AUDIO:  Contact for more information: Wendy Knipe Bredhold Media Relations Specialist, News & Information Services 812/461-5259 email The 2011 Ohio Valley STEM Educators Conference, to be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, November 5, at the University of Southern Indiana, brings together Pre-K through college educators in the Tri-state region to share new and innovative teaching strategies, discover hands-on, inquiry-based activities, and network with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) educators. During this one-day conference, educators can explore ways to enhance STEM education in their classrooms. Tours of the Science Center, the Engineering Department, and the campus will be offered. This year's conference will feature a workshop by Susan Kohler, Aerospace Education Services Project (AESP) Education Specialist with the NASA Glenn Research Center. Kohler will present "On the Moon with NASA-Engineering Design Challenges" from 11:15 a.m. to noon in Education Center Room 2113. With hands-on projects such as an air-powered rocket and a rubber band-powered moon rover, she will show teachers how to bring engineering and the adventure of space exploration to life for students. The Ohio Valley STEM Educators Conference is sponsored by USI's Southwest Indiana STEM (SwiSTEM) Center, which focuses on improvement of STEM-related education through curriculum redesign, realignment, and professional development for educators in the nine counties within the Southwest Indiana region.
