Indiana artisan directory in the works |

The Ohio River Scenic Byway (for which
USI’s outreach program, Historic Southern Indiana, provides
administrative support) and Werking Communities, Inc., are
partnering on a new southern Indiana artisan project, By Hoosier
Hands.
The first phase of the project includes the creation of driving
trails that feature artisans within a 21-county region in southern
Indiana. The driving trails will be promoted to travelers on a Web
site and through brochures. In addition to the driving trails,
arts-related business owners will receive training on selling their
work on a retail and wholesale basis.
The second phase of By Hoosier Hands involves the creation of
a major artisan sales outlet and a juried system for artisan
products, similar to the Kentucky Craft marketing program.
By Hoosier Hands is creating a directory of artisans and
retail outlets that sell Indiana-made artisan products. This
directory is the starting point for building a network that will
help artisans identify potential selling opportunities for their
work. In addition, it will assist retailers in identifying sources
of new products for their stores.
The directory will list artisan contact information, medium, and
willingness to sell products wholesale and to demonstrate work at
special events. Retail outlet information will include contact
information, desire to sell Indiana-made products, and preferred
method of artisan inquiry.
The directory will be available on the Ohio River Scenic Byway’s Web
site,
www.ohioriverscenicroute.org, by October 15, 2006. A By
Hoosier Hands Web site will be constructed in 2007.
To be listed in the By Hoosier Hands Artisan Business Directory,
participants will fill out a questionnaire and return it to Werking
Communities by September 5, 2006. There is a one time listing fee of
