2010 Exhibition Calendar
Deadline to submit extended to October 15, 2009! February 27-April 3, 2010. Since the 1960’s the feminist art movement has been changing perceptions of the role of gender in culture and giving form to the history of contemporary art. Feminist artists have addressed topics of gender, femininity, feminism, politics, spirituality and sexuality among many others. Their activism helped not only to shift the perception of women and women artists, but also change our culture of inequity among genders. Although the beginning of the feminist art movement was most active on the east and west coast, many of the influential artists of the genre are native to the Midwest. Mary Beth Edelson, a seminal artist of the movement, grew up in the Hoosier State. Many other artists, including Judith Barry, Jeanne Dunning, Laurie Anderson, Judy Chicago, Betsy Damon, Renee Green, Ann Hamilton, Harmony Hammond, Mary Kelly, Jenny Holzer, Maya Lin, Kate Millett, Nancy Spero and Sue Williams have roots in the Midwest. In celebration of women’s history month 2010, the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary art will give tribute to the history of feminist art by hosting Feminist Art of Indiana a juried exhibition of Indiana's premier Feminist Artists from February 27-April 3, 2010. The New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art invites professional and amateur artists to submit entries for the exhibition. The deadline for submission is October 1, 2009. Please see below for application instructions. The exhibition Feminist Art of Indiana will coordinate with a Women’s Colloquium to be held in New Harmony March 5-7, 2010. More information on the Women’s Colloquium can be found at www.nhgallery.com
