OTHELLO

By William Shakespeare

June 13 – 29, 2008

The most intimate of Shakespeare’s great tragedies, Othello sweeps us away to the exotic world of Venice and Cyprus with lightning-quick storytelling and lush language. In this captivating tale of love, suspicion, and betrayal, Othello, a powerful Moorish warrior, is the ultimate outsider in Venetian society. Desdemona, the dutiful daughter of a powerful senator, defies her family and falls deeply in love with Othello. Their happiness is threatened by Othello’s most trusted confidante, Iago, who wages a covert war against the Moor. Desdemona’s devotion is matched only by Iago’s appetite for revenge. New Harmony Theatre’s production of this enduring drama launches its commitment to producing Shakespeare’s four great tragedies over four years.

CRIMES OF THE HEART

By Beth Henley

July 11 – 27, 2008

In this Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy, the Magrath sisters of Hazlehurst, Mississippi, reunite in the kitchen of their family home to struggle through “a real bad day.” Babe has been sprung from prison on charges of shooting her husband because she “just didn’t like his looks.” Lenny is spending her 30th birthday taking care of Babe and contemplating spinsterhood when her neighbor drops in to tell her that her pet horse has been struck by lightning. Meg arrives from California to reveal that her dreams of a career in show business never took flight, so she has been working in a dog food factory. Meg’s old flame, Babe’s intensely devoted defense lawyer, and the sisters’ overbearing grandfather and busybody cousin complete the cast of characters. According to The New York Times, this pitch-perfect portrayal of Southern sisterhood “[mines] a pure vein of Southern Gothic humor worthy of Eudora Welty and Flannery O’Connor” that “rings true enough to draw that dark, heart-deep laughter.”
