EVANSVILLE TRISTATE AREA AND THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN INDIANA
SAFE ZONE OBJECTIVES
|
1. To increase the overall USI community's understanding and awareness of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues. Through our display of support of the LGBT community and education programs, we aim to change perceptions, therefore changing the campus and community climate for and with the LGBT community.
2. To provide relevant resources for Allies and persons who are LGBT. This includes supplying factual information about persons who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer, and providing practical suggestions about dealing with homophobia, heterosexism, and other LGBT issues.
3. To mobilize supporters of the LGBT community and work towards ending homophobia, heterosexism, discrimination, and violence towards the LGBT community.
4. To educate supporters of the LGBT community so that they may be more effective supporters and educators of the community at large |
5. To offer a sense of community and a greater sense of safety to those who experience isolation and loneliness due to their sexual orientation, identity, and gender expression.
6. To visually display support for those who are LGBT. The Safe Zone program will create areas on campus and in the community where individuals can visibly see that support exists, discrimination will not be tolerated, and allies are available for confidential discussions regarding LGBT issues.
