PREPARING FOR ACADEMIC ADVISING

One of the main components of orientation is meeting with your academic advisor
and choosing courses for the semester. There is a lot of information given to you on orientation day, but don’t worry if you cannot remember everything. Answers to your questions are available on our Web site, from your advisor, and from others on campus. To prepare for your academic advising appointment, think about these questions and investigate these resources:

New Students
Step 1: All students need to complete major requirements, University Core Curriculum requirements, and electives.
To start thinking about what classes you would like to take, answer these questions:
    What was your favorite subject in high school?
   
Why? 
   
What was your least favorite subject in high school?
    Why? 
   
What do you like to do in your free time? 
   
What is your planned major?
   
If undecided, what majors are you considering? 
    How many years of foreign language have you taken?
   
Do you intend to take/continue in foreign language classes
    while at USI? Yes ____ No____ If yes, what language?
    Did you take any AP Exams in high school?
   
Yes____ No___ Subject:
   
Do you have any college credits?
   
Yes____ No___ Courses:
   
Do you plan to work during the school year?
   
Yes ____ (continue) No____ (skip to Step 2)
   
How many total hours a week do you plan to work during the school year?

Step 2: View “First Advising Appointment” video.

Step 3: View the requirements of the University Core Curriculum.

Step 4: View the check sheet for your major.

Step 5: Log into myUSI and run a degree audit for your major.

Step 6: Develop a list of possible courses you are interested in taking for your first semester. Don’t worry about specific times of classes. Bring this with you to orientation and discuss it with your advisor.

Transfer Students
Step 1:
If you will have some college classes completed before attending USI, make sure you have a final transcript sent to USI.

Step 2: Once USI has received your transcript(s) and completed the official evaluation, you can view how these courses may have fulfilled Core and Major requirements. This can be viewed through myUSI using degree audit.

Step 3: View “First Advising Appointment” video.

Step 4: View the requirements of the University Core Curriculum.

     Step 5: View the check sheet for your major.

Step 6: Log into myUSI and run a degree audit for your major.

Step 7: Develop a list of possible courses you are interested in taking for your first semester.
Don’t worry about specific times of classes. Bring this with you to orientation and discuss it with your advisor.
