Q:
Why should I apply to be an AMIGO?
A: Employers are looking for college graduates with customer service,
communication, and leadership skills. You
gain all three by being an AMIGO. You
also interact with diverse populations, work as a part of a team, and become
instantly recognizable by an entire class of incoming freshmen.
Q:
How much time does it take to be an AMIGO?
A: Most AMIGOs only work about 3-4 hours per week during the spring semester
(with the exception of a weekend retreat and three one-day orientation
sessions). During the summer,
AMIGOs are required to work three weekends (Thursday-Saturday) of orientation
sessions.
Q:
What kinds of tasks are AMIGOs required to do?
A: AMIGOs facilitate small group sessions with new students about getting
involved, services available to students, academic advising, and making the
transition to college. AMIGOs also
assist faculty members with academic advising and registration, and they
acquaint students and their family members to the campus.
Finally, AMIGOs help out with Welcome Week and other programs designed
to help new students adjust to college life.
Q:
Can I take summer classes or have another summer job as an AMIGO?
A: Yes! AMIGOs can easily manage
taking summer classes or having another summer job.
You just have to make your other supervisor(s) aware of your AMIGO time
commitments. You are required to
ask off from your other job for AMIGO responsibilities (which only include
three weekends during the summer).
Q:
How much money do AMIGOs usually make?
A: During the spring semester, you should make enough to keep gas in your car.
However, during the summer, AMIGOs average around $125-150 per working
weekend. It’s not much money,
but most AMIGOs do this job for the great leadership experience and the desire
to help USI’s newest Eagles!
Q:
Why do you select AMIGOs in the fall?
A: AMIGOs go through training during the spring semester to be prepared for
our orientation sessions when they start in March.
AMIGOs have to be able to answer any question that may be asked by a
new student, so AMIGO training begins in January.
Q:
Can I apply to be an AMIGO if I am a freshman?
A: Absolutely! However, the AMIGO
position is difficult for many freshmen to obtain because they haven’t had
much of an opportunity to get involved and develop their leadership skills.
Nonetheless, there are usually several freshmen on the AMIGO team each
year. The best thing you can do is
go through the application and interview process.
If you aren’t selected this year, get more involved on campus,
improve your leadership skills, and try again next year!
