Spring 2008

A learning community dedicated to excellence, the University of Southern Indiana provides students with educational opportunity both in and outside the classroom and is a model for student-centered postsecondary education.  Students who choose USI find high quality academic programs, affordable costs, an environment that promotes academic success, and opportunities for personal and career growth.

Students and alumni of the University of Southern Indiana continue to excel in the classroom and in the community.  Last fall’s entering class came to USI well prepared and with high expectations.  The class includes 58 Indiana valedictorians and its members come from 91 Indiana counties, 35 states, and 44 nations.  The Class of 2007 increased the number of USI alumni to more than 25,000.  Over 75 percent of our alumni reside in southwestern Indiana, providing leadership in the sciences, teaching our children, managing our businesses, serving our hospitals, and enhancing the arts.  USI alumni are engaged in the community and help make it a dynamic place to live and work.

The University remains committed to educating students for the regional workforce and has been an economic engine for the southwestern Indiana and tri-state region, working with employers and regional leaders to facilitate economic development.  The 2007 President’s Task Force on Workforce and Economic Development was established to report on the University’s leadership and responsiveness in regional economic development and to make recommendations for academic and training programs that will meet the future workforce and economic development needs of the region.  The findings of the Task Force, presented in July 2007, provide a foundation for the programs and services USI will offer in the coming years.  The report of the Task Force can be found at http://www.usi.edu/president/2007taskforce/.

As the University seeks to constantly meet its mission, we are grateful to our elected officials and friends in the private sector for helping us achieve our goal of providing excellent and affordable education to Hoosier students.
