Evansville,
located on the banks of the Ohio River in the southwest part of the
state, is Indiana’s third largest city. It is a regional hub for
southern Indiana, western Kentucky, and southern Illinois and is a
center for commerce, health care, education, and retail. The broad
economic base of the region has helped build an economy known for its
stability, diversity, and vitality. As of the 2000 census, the
city’s population was 121,582 and the metropolitan area’s population was
342,815. Evansville is known for its friendly, welcoming
residents. In 2004, Evansville was named an “All American City” by the National Civic League.
In 2008, Evansville was named Readers' Choice winner in Kiplinger's poll
of favorite places to live, work, and play. Kiplinger's cited "a
low crime rate, affordable homes, good schools, hardly any traffic and
