Common Questions

Who can go on an Outdoor Adventure trip?
Outdoor Adventure trips are open to USI undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in at least one (1) credit hour and have paid the student activity fee as a requirement for participation.

How much do trips cost?
The cost of a trip depends on the activity. Trip costs are offset by the student activity fee, therefore, trips are reasonably priced. Most trips are no cost to the student and others range between $10 and $25, with multi-day trips varying depending on activity.

What is provided on the trips?
The University or contracted guide service provides transportation, all necessary equipment, trained instructors, and food.

How do I sign up?
Trip registration forms are available online or in the Intramural Recreational Sports office located in the Recreation and Fitness Center. These forms need to be completed and returned by the entry deadline date. Space on trips is limited with priority given to early registrants and first time Outdoor Adventure participants.

Is previous experience necessary to attend a trip?
No, most trips are designed for beginners. However, advanced trips are available and can be attended by anyone willing to meet the prerequisites. To determine the proper trip for you, consult the staff of Intramural Recreational Sports.

What if I cannot swim?
Participants do not have to know how to swim to go on Outdoor Adventure trips as they are designed for beginners and all care is taken to ensure participant safety. Lifejackets are required for any water activity and instructors take special care with non-swimmers.

Who are the instructors?
The University provides a professional staff member on each trip and most trips are professionally guided by a local service (Vertical eXcape). Instructors enjoy the wilderness and are constantly pursuing outdoor recreational activities. In addition, they have medical and rescue training and extensive knowledge of their activity area.
