Get Involved! Help Prevent Sexual Assault

Sexual assault prevention and education programs are reviewed and advised by a task force of university and community leaders in their field. Programs are created and implemented to encourage student body participation in the education and prevention of sexual assault and rape, which has or will affect students, faculty, or staff associated with USI at one point in time.

Self Defense for Women
USI offers, through the Recreation, Fitness, & Wellness Center and Housing & Residence Life, Self Defense for Women trainings to educate women about awareness, prevention, risk education, and avoidance. Two classes are offered. The first is a brief 2-hour class that provides an introduction to safety and self defense. The second is a 4-week class that provides more in-depth knowledge of self defense techniques. This class is based on the Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) course, and is designed to teach students and employees basic self-defense techniques and to improve coordination. Additionally, classes help participants develop self-confidence and discipline, and increase physical and mental capabilities. Both programs are taught by certified instructors.

If you have questions about any self defense for women classes, please contact the RFWC at 461-5268, or contact Christine Tolis.

Male Allies Against Rape & Violence (MAARV)
MAARV mobilizes men to be allies in the fight against sexual assault and rape. MAARV supports men in understanding their responsibilities and opportunities to help stop the victimization of women. This group also focuses on the role of gender and sexism in the perpetuation of violence, and in doing so, MAARV is taking a lead in efforts to prevent violence against women. For more information, contact Todd Schroer.

Step Up! Bystander Intervention Training
If something does not look or feel right, step in and say something! Many assaults and other issues, such as high-risk drinking and mental health concerns can be prevented by a third party. It is always better to intervene before something happens than to regret not doing it later.

USI offers bystander intervention programming to students, providing them the skills and knowledge to intervene in a variety of situations. To schedule a bystander intervention training for your group, contact the RFWC at 461-5268 or Christine Tolis. For more information about the Step Up! program, visit www.stepupprogram.org.
