The prickly field thistle is an eye-catching plant that's a favorite of butterflies.

The many species of thistle are similar and hard to distinguish. I'll be double-checking my identification of this plant.

Frequency: Several plants found in dry, open field.

Blooms: August to the end of summer.

Range: Found more frequently in northern Indiana, considered rare in the south.

Also found from Massachusetts to Minnesota and from Florida to Texas.
