Baccalaureate/Doctor of Medicine Program

Eligibility
Students eligible to apply to the program will be residents of Indiana and meet the following criteria:

  1. a minimum SAT score of 1200 excluding the writing score or 1800 including the writing score on a single sitting of a nationally administered SAT or ACT score of 27 and
  2. a high school grade point average of at least 3.5/4.0

Application Process
Admission to the joint B/MD program is a dual process. Students entering the program will be independently accepted into the undergraduate program at the University of Southern Indiana and the medical degree program at Indiana University School of Medicine.

The following procedure will be followed:

  1. Applications will be sent to the B/MD Advisory Committee at the Indiana University School of Medicine-Evansville; simultaneously applications must be submitted for admission to the University of Southern Indiana.
  2. The B/MD advisory committee will arrange for qualified candidates to have an interview with members of that committee.
  3. Applications from selected qualified students will then be forwarded to the Admissions Committee of Indiana University School of Medicine.
  4. Final selection and admission to the School of Medicine will be the responsibility of the Admissions Committee of Indiana University School of Medicine

Neither acceptance into the University of Southern Indiana nor a recommendation to forward the student’s application to the Admissions Committee of Indiana University School of Medicine guarantees acceptance by the School of Medicine. Selected students will have a provisional seat in Indiana University School of Medicine.

The application will contain the following:

  1. The application form (pdf)
  2. A letter of evaluation from high school guidance counselor, high school principal, a high school teacher, and a personal reference from an unrelated individual (minister, employer, etc.)
  3. High school transcripts (through 7th semester, if possible)
  4. An essay discussing his/her interest in medicine and long-term goals in the profession of medicine.

Retention and Progression
Once admitted into the program, the student must meet defined criteria to claim the provisional seat reserved in the Indiana University School of Medicine. Those criteria are as follows:

Students may major in any field but must complete specified courses for this program and application to medical school. If a student fails to meet the above requirements, they will not be allowed to matriculate directly into the Indiana University School of Medicine. The student may seek admission to the School of Medicine through normal pathways, including the interview.

Scholarship Support
Six students will be selected each year. The University of Southern Indiana will provide full tuition waivers for the undergraduate portion of the program, not to exceed eight academic semesters.

If a student fails to maintain the required GPA, they will be dismissed from the program and their level of scholarship will drop back to the level of the departmental scholarship awarded upon application as a freshman at the University of Southern Indiana (assuming the student meets the minimum grade point average requirements for that scholarship).

Academic Advising
The USI pre-medical advisor and the B/MD Advisory Committee will advise the students. Click here for a list of advisors.
