| September 07 - Airline passengers and crews who gripe about poor cabin air quality could have a new culprit to blame: the oils on their skin, hair and clothing. A study in the current issue of ACS' Environmental Science & Technology suggests interactions between body oils and ozone found in airplane cabins could lead to the formation of chemical byproducts that might worsen nasal irritation, headaches, dry eyes and lips and other common air traveler complaints. Researchers say they have developed a DNA-based computer that could lead to faster,
more accurate tests for diagnosing West Nile Virus and bird flu. The new technology
could be used in the future to develop instruments that can simultaneously diagnose
and treat cancer, diabetes or other diseases, according to a team of scientists at
Columbia University Medical Center in New York and the University of New Mexico,
Albuquerque. Their study is scheduled to appear in the November issue of Nano Letters.

| Stay abreast on current issues related to legislative activity by visiting the Capital Connection. The Capitol Connection is published to keep its subscribers informed about legislative and regulatory activities. Additionally, the Connection serves as a vehicle to encourage local section member involvement and interaction. |
| On March 2, the ACS asked its Legislative Action Network members to write their
members of Congress regarding co-sponsoring the Partnership for Access to laboratory
Science (PALS) Act (H.R. 524). So far 936 members have written and the number of
co-sponsors has more than doubled. Thank you. Your letters are helping. On March 8, a hearing was held on this legislation (see the upcoming March edition of The Capitol Connection) with more hearings planned for later this month. If you haven't written, there is still time. Simply go here and click on "Support Laboratory Science in High Need Schools." The PALS Act would establish a pilot program to improve hands-on laboratory science capabilities at the high-school level--especially in high-need schools--by creating public-private partnerships funded through NSF. |

We will be posting links to REU and other undergraduate research
opportunities on this web site in the near future.
