 A. Activities

Please describe and rank up to ten of your section's activities during 2002. Provide (a) the title of the activity, (b) a one paragraph description of the activity, and (c) an indication of which ACS Strategic Thrusts. Please refer to the end of this section for a listing of the ACS Strategic Thrusts or see Part I, questions 3-12. If you wish to provide details beyond these paragraphs, please do so in Appendix 1.
Activity #1
a) Title:
Chemistry and Hygiene
b) Description
(please limit to
one paragraph):

The members of University of Southern Indiana (USI)
Dental Hygiene Program, IN-KY Border section and ACS
Student Affiliates at USI joined forces to present
some ways that "Chemistry Keeps Us Clean". Posters
illustrating the proper way to use toothpaste and
brushes to clean teeth, how to use whitening agents
and how to make a dental mold provided a background
for the hands-on activities. Participants brushed
their teeth and then check for proper technique using
a dye in a chewable tablet. They also made molds of
their finger to illustrate the technique used by
dentist to make molds of patient's teeth.
Participants took home tooth brushes and dental floss.
Local section officers and Student Affiliate
members also presented the proper way to wash hands
using the special lotion and uv light provided by ACS
for NCW. The opportunity to work with another
profession group to show that cemistry really does
keep us clean was a unique opportunity!
See Appendix 4A for photo of Chemistry and Hygiene at
USI.

University of Southern Indiana Student Affiliates
authored a grant to obtain funds to provide activities
for underrepresented girls in Owensboro, KY. Local
section members worked with the Student Affiliates to
provide this chemistry outreach program at the Girls
Club. Approximately 70 ten-year-old girls
participated in these activities. The hands-on

Outreach continued this year with the Evansville,
IN Boys and Girls Club the week before NCW. Local
section members interacted with approximately 30
children in this kick off for NCW. The hands-on
activities included many experiments from past NCW
materials, and several from the Chemistry Keeps Us
Clean theme. The children enjoyed the experiments,
and all said we would see them the following week at
NCW events. The television and newspaper coverage at
this event was fantastic and helped promote the
upcoming events.

Child- Care Givers Hands-On Workshop
b) Description
(Please limit
to one paragraph)

A Saturday workshop for child-care givers in Posey
County was held at Mt. Vernon High School on Saturday,
September 21. The workshop featured experiments that
the adults can perform with the children using
household chemicals. The participants performed the
hands-on activities and were given instructions for
performing the experiments with the children. A
packet of materials was assembled for each of the 18
participants to take home with them. They were
extremely appreciative of the opportunity to learn how
to do chemistry experiments with the children.

Activity #5
a) Title
Environmental Lecture-Local High Schools
b) Description
Please limit
to one Paragaph

On November 12 an environmental presentation
emphasizing Green Chemistry was conducted via
interactive television from Harrison High School.
Other area high school classrooms were connected so
that the students and the presenter could see each
other and participated in a Questions and Answers
session in addition to the PowerPoint presentation.
We have talked about doing a careers in chemistry
presentation this spring. Very positive feedback from
the students makes us think this is another program
that might be expanded in the future.

a) Title:
Mock Interviews
b) Description
Please limit
to one Paragraph

IN-KY Border members held mock interviews for
Senior Chemistry majors at the University of Southern
Indiana. Each interview was videotaped and then the
interviewer immediately reviewed the tape with the
student and they discussed possible improvements
in the interview process. Prior to the interviews,
resumes and cover letters or personal statements were
critiqued. Students planning to attend graduate
schools, wrote resumes and personal statements, which
were reviewed. These students attended a mock
graduate school visitation and interview.

Activity #7
a) Title:
National Chemistry Week
b) Description:
Please limit to
one paragraph

Our traditional activities involved chemical
demonstrations and hands-on activities in the
educational shop: Hands-On Discovery at Washington
Square Mall on Saturday and the Evansville Science and
Art Museum on Sunday. Over 250 children and parents
joined in the fun at these locations. Members of IN-
KY Border section, both academic and industrial, and
area Student Affiliates visited many of the regions
fourth grade classrooms to promote the Wonder Science
Unifying event on Chemistry Keeps You Clean. Over
2500 elementary students participated in the hands-on
activities. Copies of the Wonder Science magazine
were distributed to all of these students. Over 150
volunteers helped with these activities during NCW.
The Section and the University of Southern Indiana
supplied all of the materials needed for these
activities. Supplies were also provided for a
NCW window at Central Library. Some area high school
teachers and General Electic Chemists helped with the
fourth grade classroom visits. They took their
students or colleagues to help with the hands-on
activities.
See Appendix 5 for photo of silly putty.

Activity #8
a) Title:
Mole Day Chemistry Bowl
b) Description:
Please limit to
one paragraph.

To celebrate Mole Day, the IN-KY Border section and
the University of Southern Indiana Chemistry
Department held a chemistry bowl. Ten regional high
schools sent teams of three students to participate in
this event. The chemistry teachers brought the rest
of their students to watch the competition and cheer
on their team. After the competition, tours of the
Chemistry department were given. Lunch was provided
for the teachers and team members and the event
concluded with an award ceremony at lunch. Over 100
high school chemistry students participated in this
event.

Activity #9
a) Title:
Girl Scouts Lock-In
b) Description:
Please Limit to
one paragraph

This was the third year that the IN-KY Border
section promoted women in science by hosting a lock-in
on the campus of the University of Southern Indiana.
This year over 70 Girl Scouts earned three badges in
chemistry through hands-on experiments. The Girl
Scout organization wants us to make this an annual
event. The scouts performed many, many experiments
including all of those in the NCW magazine. Many of
the experiments were taken from previous NCW
materials. At the end of the experiments a chemical
demonstration show which reinforced the concepts
studied during the evening (6:00 PM - 11:00 PM) and
provided lots of entertainment for everyone.
See Appendix 1A for a photo.

a) Title:
Boy Scouts Merit Badge
b) Description:
Please limit to
one paragraph

More than 25 Boy Scouts earned their chemistry
merit badge at the annual Boy Scout day on February
9. The local section and the USI Student Affiliates
joined forces to provide more than 25 different hands-
on activities for the Scouts. Many of these
experiments were taken from past NCW materials, for
example studying hard and soft water, acid/base
reactions, chromatography, metal reactivity series,
polymers and air and water pollution. After
completing all the requirements for the merit badge in
the morning, the Scouts were treated to chemical
demonstrations illustrating the concepts covered in
the badge. The demonstrations are always a hit!
