Activity #1 a) Title: b) Description (please limit to one paragraph): Our traditional activities include chemical demonstrations and a variety of hands-on activities. These demonstrations and activities are conducted at local 4th grade classrooms, after school programs, the Evansville Museum, and at the University of Southern Indiana. Both academic and industrial members of the section join forces with the USI Student Affiliates and UE students to assemble the materials and provide the activities each year. The annual Girl Scout Overnight is a cornerstone in our NCW activities. The Mole Day Competition for area high schools is also an important component of the NCW activities. The schools send 3-member teams to compete in the contest and all students enjoy chemical demonstrations and a tour of the University of Southern Indiana's chemistry department. Plaques are given to the first and second place teams. c) Which Core Strategy(s)does this activity support? (Please refer to the List of Core Strategies) 1 2 3 4 5 6 This activity was new in 2005 Activity #2 a) Title b) Description (Please limit to one paragraph) Because first year chemistry students cannot compete in the very successful Mole Day Celebration during NCW, the section embraced the Earth Day concept and invited first year chemistry students to compete during the Earth Day Celebration. The celebration included a competition between 3-member teams from each of the high schools as well as chemical demonstrations and a tour of the University of Southern Indiana's campus. Plaques are given to the first and second place teams. This event was attended by over 100 area high school students. c) Which Core Strategy(s) does this activity support? (Please refer to the list of Strategic Thrusts) 1 2 3 4 5 6 This activity was new in 2005 Activity #3 a) Title b) Description Please limit to one paragraph In April, the section sponsored an awards banquet honoring outstanding sophomores and seniors from the four area universities and colleges. The banquet was preceded by a student poster session at which seven undergraduates presented their research work. c) Which Core Strategy(s) does this activity support? (Please refer to the list of Core Strategies) 1 2 3 4 5 6 This activity was new in 2005 Activity #4 a) Title: b) Description (Please limit to one paragraph) The Indiana/Kentucky Border Section and the St. Louis Section received funding through the ACS to produce a DVD intended to help unemployed chemists and beginning chemists find jobs. Warren Bush's presentation was filmed April 27th 2005 at the University of Southern Indiana. DVDs were produced and given to ACS for distribution to local sections. Some of these DVDs were distributed at the national meeting in Washington, DC. c) Which Core Strategy(s) does this activity support? (Please refer to the list of core strategies.) 1 2 3 4 5 6 This activity was new in 2005 Activity #5 a) Title b) Description Please limit to one Paragaph ACS president Bill Carroll visited the Mount Vernon, Indiana facility of General Electric Advanced Materials in September. As a part of his visit to southwestern Indiana, Dr. Carroll spent part of the afternoon with University of Southern Indiana chemistry students at a local coffeehouse. Dr. Carroll's informal discussion revealed the spectrum of opportunities that exist for students in all areas of the chemical industry. In the evening, Dr. Carroll presented a lecture on the recycling of plastics for the local section. This presentation was well attended by local section members from industry and academia as well as by citizens from the local area. c) Which Core Strategy(s) does this activity support? (Please refer to the list of Core Strategies) 1 2 3 4 5 6 This activity was new in 2005 Activity #6 a) Title: b) Description Please limit to one Paragraph This year, more than 25 Boy Scouts earned their merit badges at the all day session at the University of Southern Indiana. This annual event required numerous volunteers to help assemble and many stations in the chemistry labs. The Scouts rotated through each station and had to complete each activity in order to earn their badge. Student Affiliates and volunteers explained the chemical concept involved at each station. c) Which Core Strategy(s) does this Activity Support? (Please refer to the list of Core Strategies. 1 2 3 4 5 6 This activity was new in 2005 Activity #7 a) Title: b) Description: Please limit to one paragraph Members of the section continue to provide chemical demonstrations for a number of cub scout troops in the local area. The number of requests for these demonstrations grow each year. In addition, members of the section provide demonstrations for various middle school groups as a part of the campus visits organized to bring the students to a college campus to encourage them to consider attending college after graduation from high school. Many of these groups are made up of children from families that have never considered college as an option. c) Which Core Strategy (s) does this activity support? The Indiana/Kentucky Border Section continues to participate in the Chemistry Olympiad. Members of the section administered the tests during both sessions of the Olympiad and conducted the laboratory section of the test. Participants were provided lunch by the section. c) Which Core Strategy(s) does this activity support? After the dinner several members toured Kentucky Wesleyan College's new science facilities. c) Which Core Strategy(s) does this activity support? B. Summary - Overall Section Activities   Please summarize in 1,000 words or less, the activities of the section in 2004 which have not been already described. Outstanding events should be described in some detail and appropriate attachments included in Appendix 1. Programs described here may be featured in publications produced by the ACS Membership Division and/or at the ACS Leaders Conference. Our group holds a variety of events for the public and chemists alike. We hold monthly chemistry seminars for our members in addition to our outreach events. Four tour speakers and three additional speakers were brought in to give presentations to section members and college students. Our traditional activities during NCW include chemical demonstrations and a variety of hands-on activities. Both academic and industrial members of the Indiana/Kentucky Border section join forces with the USI Student Affiliates to assemble the materials and provide the activities each year. The number of man-hours needed to provide this service is phenomenal for a section our size! In addition to the weekend activities, members and students provide hands-on activities and demonstrations to fourth- grade classrooms throughout the area. Approximately 1500 students enjoy these activities each year. The annual Girl Scout Overnight is a cornerstone in our NCW activities. More than 80Girl Scouts earned three merit badges in our annual Chemistry Connection sleepover. They spend several hours performing numerous experiments. After the hands- on events, the group gathers to watch a chemical demonstration show. The IN-KY Border Section also hosts a Mole Day Chemistry Competition to help celebrate National Chemistry Week. Area high school chemistry students compete in this annual competition. Several of the schools have T-shirts made to advertise the competition and their team. After the hour long contest, students tour the chemistry facilities at the University of Southern Indiana. This event is also concluded with a chemical demonstration show. In addition to our usual NCW activities, local section members participated in the Downtown Street Festival/Toyota River City Autofest on Sept. 24th, 2005. At this event hands-on activities for children were performed at the Kids Garage in conjunction with USIs ACSSA group. Approximately 75 children stopped by for the fun. Local section members were also involved in the Funk-in-the-City Art Show on the same day. At this event hands-on activities for children were performed at the Hands-On-Discovery area in conjunction with USI's ACSSA group. In addition, a demonstration show was performed by the ACSSA members. Approximately 150 children saw the show and did the activities. Undergraduate students were provided an opportunity to present their research at a local poster session. Some high school students are invited to participate in research projects at the universities. This mentoring activity involves the section and the student affiliates because college students often work with the high school students on a research project directed by one of the faculty. We participate in other major events, Earth Day, and demonstrations and seminars are provided for high school and K-8 students throughout the year. In addition, members of the section provide talks and chemical demonstrations for a number of cub scout troops throughout the year. Several members volunteer as judges for the local Tri- State Science and Engineering Fair and the section provides monetary awards to the top junior and senior presentations. In addition the section provides monetary awards to the top sophomore and senior students in the areas four universities and colleges.

C. Local Section and Chair Goals   1. 2005 Goal Attainment. The Local Section Activities Committee strongly encourages local section planning. As a result, the 2005 local section annual report should follow-up on the attainment of goals. Please list the goals you set at the beginning of your term for your section and yourself, and report on the attainment of the goals. a) Local Section Goals and Assessment: 1) Increase participation of industrial members.
